Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund

The Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund (EDAF) is a draw-down fund administered by the Canadian Red Cross Society that allows for immediate Canadian support to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) emergency operations in response to sudden-onset small- and medium-scale humanitarian situations, including natural disasters, non-recurrent health epidemics, and conflicts. The EDAF increases the effectiveness and timeliness of assistance to crisis-affected people.

Uganda – Population movement from Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

On April 13, 2022, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched an emergency relief operation to support the Uganda Red Cross Society in providing immediate assistance to 4,500 people for 3 months. On May 30, 2022, the IFRC revised and extended the operation to provide additional assistance to approximately 14,500 people for 6 months. On June 27, 2022, the IFRC launched an upgraded Emergency Appeal to support the Uganda Red Cross Society in providing assistance to approximately 50,000 people for 1 year. The operation will focus on providing access to shelter, safe water and sanitation, and critical healthcare for newly arrived refugees from the DRC.

On July 7, 2022, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched an emergency relief operation to support the Malian Red Cross in providing immediate assistance to approximately 4,800 people for 3 months. The operation will focus on providing cash assistance to at-risk groups, including to female heads of household, pregnant and breastfeeding women and unsupported internally displaced people, as well as for screening and referral services for the treatment of acute malnutrition.

On 20 December 2021, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched an emergency plan of action to support the Angola Red Cross Society in providing immediate assistance to approximately 2,500 people for three months. On 26 May 2022, the IFRC launched a revised emergency appeal to support the Angola Red Cross Society in providing additional assistance to approximately 329,000 people for twelve months. The operation will focus on the provision of multipurpose cash or vouchers to allow households to meet food and other needs, as well as support for supplemental nutrition services, safe water and sanitation, and healthcare in affected communities.

On January 28, 2022, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched an emergency relief operation to support the Tanzania Red Cross Society in providing immediate assistance to approximately 500 households (approximately 2,500 people) people for 3 months. The operation will focus on providing cash grants in the districts of Longido and Monduli in Arusha and the Kiteto, Simanjiro and Mbulu districts in Manyara province to support the immediate needs of the most vulnerable food insecure households, including orphans and vulnerable children, female and child-headed households pregnant and lactating women, elderly and people living with disabilities, and chronically ill people. Following a needs assessment, additional health and nutrition services may be offered.
