The Dominican Republic commemorates Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation

Canada celebrated its 150th Anniversary in Santo Domingo with a reception and fireworks lighting up the sky, summer hockey event, a cooking workshop with youth, and a music concert.

Canada Day festivities

On June 28, the Embassy of Canada in the Dominican Republic celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Canada’s Confederation with its annual Canada Day celebration. Visiting Canadian Chef, Louis Rodaros, showcased aspects of Canadian cuisine that was paired with Canadian wine. The four themes of Canada 150 highlighting plurality and diversity, youth engagement, environmental stewardship and reconciliation were represented through displays with images and descriptive text.

Ambassador Steve Côté highlighted the friendly and growing relationship between Canada and the Dominican Republic. With more than 60 years of diplomatic relations, we work together to promote commerce, education and tourism. He emphasized that “Canada’s 150th provides an opportunity to reflect upon what it means to be Canadian, to honour our past accomplishments and set our sights on our bright future.”

Among the guests of honour at the Canada Day celebrations were the Dominican Minister of Environment - Dr. Francisco Dominguez Brito and Mr. Mariano German –Chief of the Supreme Court.  Baseball players Vladimir Guerrero (recently inducted in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame), Stanley Javier, Moisés Alou, George Bell, and Junior Noboa attended. Mr. Gerard Trudeau –  Canada150 Ambassador with more than 27 years of work in the Dominican Republic, and Mr. Louis Guay – former Canadian diplomat, now closely involved in conflict resolution also celebrated Canada Day at the event.

Canada150 and youth

On June 29, Ambassador Steve Côté and other embassy staff joined chef Louis Rodaros for a culinary workshop at Instituto Técnico Superior Comunitario ( ITSC), a community college in Santo Domingo. The chef taught the hospitality students to prepare dishes and desserts with a Canadian flavour. The Ambassador, the Institute’s Vice-rector and teachers took part in the final tasting.  to show their support of initiatives that promote training through international collaboration.  

To end our Canada Day celebrations, a local group called Radiofunk put on a free concert in Santo Domingo where they featured songs by Canadian artists.

Summer hockey

On July 8, 2017, the Canadian Embassy organized a friendly outdoor amateur hockey tournament. Ambassador Steve Côté, along with embassy staff took part in a few friendly games with members of other missions, proving that our national winter sport can be played even in the heat of summer!
