Canada Supports Democracy in Paraguay

August 5, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced that Canada will provide support to Paraguay in the area of the rule of law. Baird made the announcement during a bilateral visit to Asunción.

“Canada is committed to supporting democracy and the rule of law in Paraguay,” said Baird. “We are pleased to announce a new program to support the efforts of the newly elected Congress to strengthen legislative transparency and advance open governance.”

Through the Global Peace and Security Fund, Canada will support an initiative that will engage local political entities and civic groups in fostering greater accountability by legislators, identify priority reforms to improve transparency, and improve civic monitoring so elected officials are more responsive to their constituents. Administered by the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the project is valued at more than $200,000 and will be implemented over the next year.

Minister Baird is on a 13-day trip to Latin America to advance Canada’s engagement in the Americas—a foreign policy priority with a vision of a more prosperous, secure and democratic hemisphere.
