Canada Assumes Chairmanship of Arctic Council

May 15, 2013 - Kiruna, Sweden - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council, receives the Arctic Council chairmanship gavel from Carl Bildt, Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. Canada has assumed the chairmanship of the Arctic Council for a two-year period, 2013-2015. The Arctic Council is the leading body for international cooperation in the Arctic region.

“I’m confident that by working with our Arctic Council partners, by continuing to face our common challenges together and by building on the experience and knowledge gained over the last 16 years, we will promote strong, healthy, sustainable and vibrant communities in the circumpolar region,” said Minister Aglukkaq.

The Minister congratulated the Swedish team for their very successful chairmanship. “It has been a most productive and effective two years, and we are all grateful for your efforts,” said the Minister.
