On May 14, 2012, Minister Beverley J. Oda welcomed Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs/Emergency relief Coordinator for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
This week, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, met with Ms. Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
"As humanitarian crises continue to grow in size, frequency, and complexity, OCHA's central role in coordinating effective humanitarian action becomes even more critical," said Minister Oda. "Ms. Amos recognized Canada's strong continued support to meeting humanitarian needs around the world."
Minister Oda and Ms. Amos discussed current humanitarian situations and challenges, such as the food and nutrition crisis in Sahel region, the drought in the Horn of Africa, and the violence in Syria.
Canada's support to OCHA's operations around the world helps to ensure a well-coordinated and effective response to humanitarian crises. As a key and central component of the humanitarian system, OCHA works to facilitate communications among donors, local governments, and humanitarian agencies. OCHA also plays an instrumental role in providing policy guidance and reporting on humanitarian situations and advocates for the rights of those affected by conflict and natural disasters.
