Canada-Rwanda Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) negotiations
Background
Canada and Rwanda launched negotiations towards a Foreign Investment Promotion and Investment Agreement (FIPA) in 2014. To date only one round of negotiation has taken place in November 2014.
A bilateral FIPA provides greater predictability and certainty for Canadian investors considering investment opportunities abroad. Canada’s objective in entering these negotiations is to secure a comprehensive, high-quality agreement which will protect investors through the establishment of a framework of legally binding rights and obligations. These modern treaties carefully balance the interests of all stakeholders in Canada.
