European Parliament Calls for Stronger EU–Canada Partnership
March 11, 2026
On 11 March, the European Parliament adopted a report on relations with Canada, calling for a deeper strategic partnership between the EU and its closest partner beyond Europe. The report — the first dedicated country report on Canada in over a decade — urges EU institutions to seize the current geopolitical moment to strengthen cooperation.
It highlights closer collaboration on security, multilateralism, trade, and critical supply chains. The report also welcomes Canada’s participation as the only non-European partner in the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative and calls on the ten Member States that have not yet ratified the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) to do so swiftly.
Tobias Cremer, Member of the European Parliament and Rapporteur:
“Canada is perhaps the most European country outside Europe. In a ruptured global order, Europeans and Canadians know: It is time for this strategic alignment to translate into a deeper EU-Canada alliance”
Ambassador Nicholas Brousseau, Chargé d’affaires a.i. of Canada to the EU:
“In a world marked by growing geopolitical rivalry and uncertainty, our shared security and interests depend on standing together and deepening EU–Canada cooperation.”
