Lieu of Residence and Detachment of Members of Diplomatic Missions Outside the National Capital Region

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade presents its compliments to Their Excellencies the Heads of Diplomatic Missions and notified Chargés d’Affaires a.i. and to the Heads of International Organisations and other offices etablished in Canada, and wishes to remind Their Excellencies that it is the policy of the Government of Canada not to permit the detachment of members of the diplomatic mission from the mission to other locations other than those of the mission offices within the National Capital.

Therefore, members of the diplomatic mission cannot be accredited to a mission in Ottawa while working or residing outside of the National Capital Region, such as Toronto or Montréal. This policy also applies to the residency and employment of members of consular posts, international organisations and agencies, and other offices with respect to the location of their respective offices.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade avails itself of this opportunity to renew to Their Excellencies the Heads of Diplomatic Missions and notified Chargés d’Affaires a.i. and to the Heads of International Organisations and other offices etablished in Canada, the assurances of its highest consideration.
