Embassy visits - Ukraine situation
Canadian consular clients with urgent requests due to the current situation in Ukraine do not need to make an appointment. Clients can walk in during our office hours (listed below).

Citizenship services

Marriage abroad
Refer to Marriage abroad. Canadian citizens who want to marry in Austria need a “Statement in lieu of certificate of non-impediment to marriage” from the consular section at the Embassy of Canada in Vienna. Book an appointment to sign the Statement in person before a consular official at the Embassy.
For further information, please contact the Civil Registry "Standesamt", the Church where the marriage is to be performed or the nearest Austrian Embassy/Consulate in Canada.
Please be advised that Canadian diplomatic and consular officers are not permitted under the law of Canada to solemnize marriages nor can they allow the solemnization of marriages in the diplomatic/consular premises.
To apply for a new Canadian birth or marriage certificate:
The issuance of birth and marriage documents falls under provincial jurisdiction in Canada. These documents cannot be issued or replaced by the Embassy of Canada. Contact the Vital Statistics office, or equivalent responsible authority, in your Canadian province or territory.
Notarial services
The Embassy of Canada in Vienna provides limited notarial services, by appointment only, to Canadian citizens. In limited cases, to non-Canadian citizens when the document is intended for use in Canada.
Important information:
Many routine notarial services in Austria are provided by Austrian notaries, including:
- certified true copies
- signature authentication / witnessed signatures
- declarations or notarized statements
- apostille services for Austrian documents
- affidavits or sworn statements for use in Canada, where accepted by the receiving authority
The Embassy does not provide these services. Clients must obtain them from an Austrian notary or other local authority.
Additional information
- Documents presented to the Embassy must be in English or French, or accompanied by an official translation into English or French.
- The Embassy cannot provide advice on private legal matters.
Services offered by the Embassy
1) Apostille for eligible Canadian documents
Since January 11, 2024, Canada has been a signatory to the Apostille Convention. Apostilles now replace the previous authentication and legalization process for eligible Canadian documents used abroad.
The Embassy of Canada in Vienna can issue an apostille for eligible Canadian documents, including:
- Canadian civil documents issued by a provincial vital statistics office, such as:
- birth certificates
- marriage certificates
- death certificates
- name change certificates
- other Canadian documents that qualify for apostille under Canada’s apostille framework
Required documents
To request an apostille, you must provide:
- the original document
- a copy of your Canadian passport or other valid official photo identification
- payment of CAD 50 per document
- Complete and include the Credit Card Authorization form in your application
- If submitting more than one document, adjust the total amount accordingly

2) Statement in lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad
The Embassy may issue a Statement in lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad.
If required, the related signature must be witnessed by a consular officer by appointment.

Passport services
In-person services for regular passport applications are no longer available.
You can pay online for all your passport services before completing your passport application.

Applications may also be dropped off in person anytime during opening hours. Applicants will be contacted if there are any corrections required.
In-person appointments for non-standard passport applications are available only by referral and reserved for urgent or exceptional situations.
These appointments apply only to:
- Temporary Passport applications
- Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs)
- Requests to retain a valid passport during processing
- Canadians with accessibility or support needs who cannot apply by mail

If you need to keep your current valid passport while your new passport application is being processed, you can request a passport retention service. An additional fee applies for this service.
Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. You will be contacted directly if your application is incomplete or if more information is required. Once your complete application has been received, no further action is needed. Your new passport and original documents will be returned to you by mail.

Urgent travel
If you are travelling within 20 business days of submitting your application, you must include the planned travel date on your application and pay the temporary passport fees. Contact vienn.rppc.crtp@international.gc.ca to confirm which fees and other requirements apply to your case.

- Both parents are required to provide copies of valid photo ID that includes a signature. These copies do not need to be signed by the guarantor.

Visa and immigration services
- Submit visa applications and study and work permits to a visa application centre (VAC). Book an appointment to give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a VAC.
- Submit permanent residence applications and documents to a visa office.
- Submit applications to overcome criminal inadmissibility to a visa office.
- To sign and authenticate Section 5 of form IMM0006 virtually, search for “Canadian online notary public” online.
- The Provincial or Territorial notary association in Canada may also be contacted.
- Electronic Travel Authorization for dual citizens
Visa, residence and work permit issues in Vienna fall under the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Magistratsabteilung 35 in Vienna (in German).
