Apply for a certified Canadian criminal record check.

The criminal record check process generally requires the applicant to submit fingerprints. The Slovak Police can do these. The Slovak police will require a written request for fingerprints (in Slovak) as well as a printed RCMP form (for the RCMP process; check individual provincial/municipal police requirements). The completed fingerprints are then sent back to the Canadian authorities.

It is recommended to get the criminal record check from the RCMP's HQ in Ottawa rather than a local or provincial police detachment. Documents issued by a provincial or a municipal police agency need to be notarized in Canada first before being sent for authentication in Canada.

To prove you’re free to get married, the register office in Slovakia will ask you for an affirmation of marital status signed by a local notary public in Slovakia. In some specific circumstances, the register office may request this be done at the Embassy, if this is the case, contact us at brtsv.consular@international.gc.ca to book an appointment.

Authentication of Canadian documents

Slovak authorities occasionally require authenticated documents. Refer to Authentication of Documents for information on how to get Canadian documents authenticated. If possible, have your documents authenticated in Canada before your departure. If you are already in Slovakia, send your documents to the Authentication office in Ottawa by mail.

Marriage in Slovakia
