Bilateral relations
Canada has close relations with the Republic of Slovenia, a NATO ally since 2004, and are economic partners under the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Canada and Slovenia are both members of a wide range of UN agencies, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), La Francophonie, and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Canada recognized Slovenian independence in January 1992 and established diplomatic relations a year later. There are approximately 39,000 Canadians of Slovenian origin.
Canada's political and commercial relations with Slovenia are managed through its embassy in Budapest, Hungary, assisted by an honorary consul in Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital. Slovenia has an embassy in Ottawa, a consulate general in Burlington and consulates in Vancouver, Calgary and Moncton all headed by honorary consuls.
Trade relations
Canada enjoys preferential market access in Slovenia due to the provisional application of CETA, which Slovenia has not yet ratified.
In 2024, bilateral merchandise trade totaled $468.2 million. This includes Canadian merchandise exports of $72.6 million and merchandise imports from Slovenia of $395.6 million. Foreign direct investment from Slovenia in Canada was valued at $21 million at the end of 2024.
