Canada-European Union Digital Trade Agreement

Reinforcing commitments on digital trade and creating new opportunities for businesses in Canada and the European Union (EU).

Current status: Concluded negotiations

On October 30, 2026, Canada and the EU announced the conclusion of negotiations towards a Canada-EU Digital Trade Agreement (DTA).

The Canada-EU DTA is intended to establish high-standard digital trade rules that support trade and innovation. The agreement seeks to promote a digital economy that is open, secure and trustworthy, while preserving Canada's ability to regulate in key areas such as:

The DTA will also help support and complement the commitments already in place under the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), ensuring that the Canada-EU trade relationship continues to reflect the realities of today's digital economy.

Background and negotiations

On March 5, 2026, Canada's Minister of International Trade, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, and the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, formally launched negotiations for a Canada-EU Digital Trade Agreement (DTA). This is the first DTA that Canada has concluded, marking an important step in achieving Canada's trade diversification goals.

As part of our commitment to modernizing digital trade rules and strengthening trade ties with the EU, the Government of Canada held public consultations to invite Canadians, businesses, Indigenous partners, academics, and other stakeholders to share their views on a potential DTA from June 25 to August 25, 2025.

Feedback from these consultations helped identify opportunities to support Canadian businesses, improve regulatory transparency, and enhance predictability for companies operating in the EU market.
