The registration of a child's birth is a service offered free of charge by the RNP (Registro Nacional de las Personas) National Registry of Individuals. The registration can be made in municipalities throughout the country.
To register the birth of a child, one or both parents must go in person to the civil registry office in the municipality where the birth occurred and fill out a birth registration form, standardized throughout the country.
Moreover, one or both parents must present their own identity card and a medical certificate (reporte médico) for the birth, if the birth took place in a hospital.
If the child was born at home, the birth report must be provided by the midwife (constancia de la partera), or by any other person who attended to the mother and the newborn.
The birth report, submitted at the time of registration, must contain:
- the midwife's full name
- the number of her identity card
- her place of residence
- her signature confirming that she was the person in charge during the birth

Marriage abroad
Refer to Marriage outside Canada.
If you are getting married in Honduras, you must meet the requirements prescribed by Honduran law.
The law does not allow a civil marriage for males under 18 years of age, or women under 16 years of age.
Registro Civil or Civil Registry in Honduras will issue a marriage certificate. Canadians planning to marry in Honduras should contact the municipality of the location of the marriage or a lawyer in order to obtain the detailed requirements.
Canada is not a signatory to the Hague Convention; it is not possible to obtain an apostille on Canadian documents. To be recognized in Honduras, Canadian documents must be authenticated and legalized. See Notarial services.
The documents have to be translated in Spanish.
Notarial services
New: Canada joined the Apostille Convention and it came into effect on January 11, 2024. The new Apostille process now replaces authentication or legalization services previously available at this office.
Consular officials do not provide any legal advice or represent a person in court. The office provides the following notarial services, by appointment only, to Canadian citizens and, in limited cases, to non-Canadian citizens if the documents are intended for use in Canada. Send an email to: tglpa.consular@international.gc.ca or call (504) 2280-0971 to schedule an appointment.
Notarial services are not considered primary services and are only provided when the time and resources of the mission allow it, and are subject to consultation with headquarters in Ottawa. Consular officers may deny notarial services.
You should first seek notarial services from local notary publics or lawyers, as they are legally authorized to perform these tasks in their respective countries.
Please note: Documents must be original in English or French, or include an official translation in one of these languages.
Please print and sign the credit card authorization form (.pdf) and bring it with you to your appointment.
