Bilateral relations
Canada enjoys long-standing and strong bilateral relations with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. During World War II, the two countries grew significantly closer, when the Grand Duchess Charlotte’s family took refuge in Montréal after the German invasion of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 1940.
The Canada-Luxembourg Memorandum of Understanding on Youth Mobility, signed in 2019, highlights the strong people-to-people ties between Canada and Luxembourg. It allows young Canadians and Luxembourgers to travel and work in each other’s country.
Canada and Luxembourg signed an audiovisual co-production treaty in 2017. The treaty, which came into force on February 1, 2021, allows producers from both countries to jointly produce film or television productions through the pooling of their creative, technical and financial resources.
Luxembourg is represented in Canada by its Embassy in Ottawa, while Canada is represented in Luxembourg by the Embassy of Canada to Belgium and Luxembourg, in Brussels. In addition, both countries have nominated Honorary Consuls: Luxembourg in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montréal and Canada in Luxembourg.
Trade and investment
Canada and Luxembourg's long-standing friendship has resulted in a strong economic and trade partnership. In 2024, Canada-Luxembourg merchandise trade was $249.8 million, driven by iron, machinery, steel and rubber. Luxembourg is also one of the largest European sources of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Canada, ranking as 9th largest globally and 5th among European countries. In 2024, FDI stock from Luxembourg stood at $22.3 billion (Ultimate Investing Country Basis).
